The Gunn House Hotel

The Gunn House Hotel

Sonora, California

A recent house hunting trip required an over night stay in Sonora, California. While our family would usually stay with my best friend and her family, we were without children and opted to spring for a hotel room. There were many different events going on in the surrounding area and we were lucky enough to get one of two remaining rooms at The Gunn House Hotel.

Check in was easy and we were handed an actual key for room 15. Making our way around the building toward our room, we passed through the courtyard. Decorated with some fun antiques and some signs with quirky sayings pained on them, the hotel could be described as "quaint."

Our room was upstairs which was fine , but there was no elevators, so booking a room on the first floor would have been smart considering my husband has some mobility issues. It turned out not to be a real issue for us though.

There is an off street parking lot on the street level and one around the back of the building above the pool. There is also one handicap spot that is level with the second floor, but it is definitely too small for our giant SUV.

Our room was on the side of the building facing the lower parking lot (where we parked). I would have rather faced the street because there is more of a "porch" feeling to the walk way. It is wider and there are old wooden rocking chairs and tables on both levels of the building front.

I only got a photo of our room after we had destroyed the bed, but it was nice. Antique furniture mixed with modern amenities like A/C and a flat screen worked for me. The upper half of the door had two windows that you could unlock and swing open. This novelty became useful when I wanted to check how warm it was outside without putting on my pants in the morning.

The hotel does have a pool, but I never ended up using it. I did overhear that it was cold but refreshing from another patron. There were plenty of kids enjoying themselves, and the pool area looked very nice.

There were a ton of little seating areas throughout the property for guests to enjoy, which is not something you generally find in modern hotels.

What more can I say about this hotel? Oh just wait and I'll tell you! BREAKFAST! That's what. The parlor upstairs is a cozy place to sit and eat. Breakfast is best described as "Hosted, Homemade Continental." You are welcomed as you walk in and told to grab a plate and help yourself. You are also notified that if you would like a waffle one will be prepared fresh for you. There is a table stacked with plates, none of which has a match. There is a marble bar that is piled with homemade pastries, biscotti, coffee cake, egg and cheese casserole and fruit.

There was coffee, orange juice, milk, tea and hot chocolate available to drink. There was also store bought breads, bagels, English muffins and oatmeal. The cream cheese was sitting on a plate near the toaster in little piped swirls. If you did decide to order a waffle, you could enjoy warm syrup, strawberries and melted butter (so you don't have to smash your waffle trying to spread butter on it!) I enjoyed my breakfast seated on the long cushioned banquette and my husband loved the coffee cake.

I would stay at The Gunn House Hotel again - this time I would go for a ground floor street view room.
